Both of them had appeared as Nibelungen - dwarfs - in Seattle Opera’s 2005 production of Das Rheingold, the first of the four operas in the Ring cycle, and they had attended the other three operas, which sparked some startling minivan conversations. Wotan, king of the gods in Richard Wagner’s four-part, 17 1/2-hour epic opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen, stole a magic ring by hoodwinking a dwarf sold his sister-in-law to a pair of giants charmed his daughter to sleep imprisoned by fire - and that’s just what happens in the first two operas.
